“Frankenstem” Candy Apples.

Make these for a “healthy” Halloween

T-10 days until Halloween! And the countdown begins!!

I know, I know, Victor Frankenstein is actually the name of the scientist in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, but I mean, most people think of the monster as Frankenstein. So we’re just going to call these “Frankenstem” Candy Apples because I love putting funky twigs in the apples for a extra whimsical twist 🙂

Here in New England (I mean, I live so close to Salem, Massachusetts, the Witch City), Halloween is a pretty big deal. Decorations are everywhere, it’s finally starting to feel like fall and the trees are a beautiful orange, yellow, and red. I’m home from college this weekend and am writing this post while staring at our backyard, which is a beautiful array of autumnal colors. There’s still some green mixed in, but hopefully it’ll turn to bright orange in the next couple days just in time for Halloween!

Back to these apples. I think they’re so fun and creative, especially since there’s no need to color your caramel thanks to green apples!

What are you doing for Halloween this year? Going out or staying inside for a Halloween marathon movie night? Whatever you do, make sure these apples are included in the fun 🙂

"Frankenstem" Candy Apples.

  • 4 large green apples
  • 1 cup semisweet or milk chocolate, melted
  • chocolate sprinkles
  • almonds, pecans, or walnuts, chopped
  • candy eyes
  • pretzel rods, chopped into about 1/2-inch long pieces
  1. Dip each apple into melted chocolate to make the “hair” of the monster. While chocolate is still melted, sprinkle on chocolate sprinkles or chopped nuts. Spread a little chocolate on back of candy eyes, and stick eyes to apple. Do the same with the chopped pretzel rods. Serve, and happy Halloween!
