Healthy smoothie? I would say so.
Just to note: this is a smoothie, not a cocktail since the term “smash” is usually used to refer to a type of alcoholic drink. I just liked the sound of it and thought this smoothie was a hit so I call it “smash.” 🙂
I had a giant wrap for lunch today, so a smoothie seemed appropriate for dinner. If you don’t like carrots, this probably isn’t the smoothie for you because I have to tell you, this smoothie that serves 4 is packed with four carrots. I love pairing turmeric with carrots because not only do the flavors go well together, but also the turmeric adds to the vibrant orange color of the carrots. So the smoothie tastes and looks really good!
If you’re not familiar with the spice, turmeric is in the ginger family. Basically, in simple terms, it looks like a ginger root, but is orange on the inside. And, like ginger, the spice has IMMENSE benefits:
- It is anti-inflammatory. Curcumin, the bright yellow chemical that is produced in turmeric, acts as an inflammatory agent and helps lessen the effects of diseases, such as arthritis and high cholesterol.
- Curcumin also has been proven to help reverse many of the issues related to hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. I know, I know, big words.
- Overall, turmeric and curcumin found in many root plants act as natural painkillers that are often preferred over chemical painkillers.
